Can You Do A Paternity Test While Pregnant?

Can you get a DNA test while pregnant?

Yes, you can perform a paternity test while pregnant. There are two types of prenatal paternity tests available: invasive and non-invasive paternity testing options.

Invasive Prenatal Test: This method carries some risks and requires the involvement of the mother’s OB-GYN. Testing can be done between the 10th and 12th weeks of pregnancy using a procedure called Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS). CVS is a genetic test that checks for any genetic defects in the unborn baby.

Alternatively, Amniocentesis can be performed from the 15th to the 20th week. Amniocentesis helps determine if the unborn baby will have conditions such as Down Syndrome, Edward’s Syndrome, or Patau’s Syndrome. These procedures are typically conducted for medical reasons, but paternity testing can be included if recommended by the OB-GYN.

How much does it cost for an invasive prenatal paternity test?

The cost of an invasive prenatal paternity test is $850.00 and up.  Please note, DNA sample collection fees are not included in the cost of your test.

It should also be noted that your OBGYN’s fees are not included in the cost. Please contact our office at 888-204-0583 and allow one of our DNA Relationship Testing Consultants to assist you today.

What is a Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test (NIPP)?

A Non-Invasive Prenatal DNA Test (NIPP) determines paternity without needing a mother’s OBGYN to be part of the process. The mother’s sample is collected through a blood draw, while the father’s sample is obtained using a buccal swab.

Although IDTO does not currently offer NIPP Testing services, we aim to equip you with essential information about the process, helping you make an informed decision suited to your circumstances.

What is the cost of an Non-Invasive Prenatal paternity Testing (NIPP)?

NIPP tests can range anywhere from $1200 to $2000 depending on the company. Unfortunately, IDTO does not currently offer this service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are my DNA samples collected?

The alleged father’s samples will be collected by way of buccal swabs. The swabs will be placed inside the mouth and brushed against the cheek on both the left and right sides of the mouth. The mother’s sample will be collected by way of the use of a needle for both CVS and Amniocentesis.

Can I use my prenatal DNA test results in court?

Invasive prenatal paternity test results are legally admissible in court. This is currently the only prenatal testing option provided by IDTO, requiring an OBGYN’s involvement. Consult your healthcare professional to ensure they will perform either amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling.

Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity (NIPP) test results are generally not legally admissible. Few American labs offer a legal prenatal testing option, primarily for peace of mind. Although a court order might request non-invasive prenatal paternity testing, this occurs under rare circumstances.

If this applies to your situation, it’s crucial to ask the DNA testing company providing this service if their results are legally admissible and if the lab conducting the DNA testing is AABB accredited.

What options do I have if I cannot perform a Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity test?

The only option available is to wait for your child to be born to perform a standard cheek swab paternity test. This test can be used either for legal or non-legal purposes.
