Immigration DNA Testing Ghana

Ghanaian families seeking a U.S. visa or CRBA who lack sufficient evidence during the initial application process need to submit secondary evidence. The U.S. embassy or United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) may suggest DNA testing as an option. Below is a brief overview of what to expect from the process.

What is Ghana DNA Test for immigration?

A DNA test for immigration purposes is genetic analysis that determines a biological relationship between parent and child, siblings, or grandparent and grandchild. Below is a description of the types of DNA tests an immigration agency may suggest.

Family Relationship DNA Testing Options:

  • Paternity Test: This testing option determines if an alleged father and child are biologically related.
  • Maternity Test: This testing option determines if a mother and child are biologically related.
  • Sibling DNA Test: This testing option determines if two people share one or both biological parents when a common parent is unavailable for testing.
  • Grandparent DNA Test: This testing option determines if a grandparent and grandchild are biologically related when the biological parents of the child are unavailable for testing.

Please note: All DNA samples undergo testing and analysis by our partner AABB-accredited laboratory. Only accredited labs have results accepted by the U.S. Embassy in Accra and by USCIS. Below is a brief outline of what you need to begin the process.

How the process works:

  • You must receive a request for evidence letter from either the U.S. Embassy or USCIS to initiate the process of DNA testing for evidence submission. Performing a DNA test before receiving a letter requesting your family to provide secondary evidence is not recommended. This action may prolong your case or result in denial by the requesting immigration agency.
  • Call 888-204-0583 to initiate the process upon receipt of your request for evidence letter.
  • Our partner laboratory will schedule the petitioner’s sample collection for petitioners located in the U.S. All genetic samples will be shipped back to the lab.
  • The lab handles the shipment of the DNA test kit for the beneficiary in Ghana. The Embassy will process your information and contact the beneficiary to schedule a DNA sample collection appointment in Accra upon receipt of the DNA test kit.
  • The kit will be shipped back to the lab for testing and analysis after the beneficiary’s samples have been collected. Your results will be completed within 3 business days following the arrival of all DNA genetic samples at the laboratory.
  • A copy of your results will be sent to the requesting immigration office (USCIS or the U.S. Embassy in Accra, Ghana) upon completion. You will receive a copy of the results by email and a physical copy mailed to your home.

What is the method of DNA sample collection?

The standard method of DNA sample collection is by buccal swab. The swab is placed inside the mouth and brushed against the left and right cheeks. Blood sample collection provides another viable method with the same accuracy as the cheek swab method. The buccal swab method is preferred because it is less invasive and painful.

How long does DNA testing take to come back?

The turnaround time for results is 3 business days after the lab receives all DNA samples. The coordination of DNA sample collection appointments in Ghana is the responsibility of the embassy, which may take 6 to 8 weeks or longer.
