The most common samples used are cheek swabs and hair samples. Please note that two sets of hair samples can be used for comparative analysis.

While hair follicle samples have a 95% success rate for DNA extraction, once a DNA profile is obtained, the accuracy in determining the probability of paternity—99.99% or higher, or an exclusion—is the same as when using cheek swab samples.

Alternative Forensic Samples:

Below is a list of forensic DNA samples that can be used when an alleged father or child is unavailable to provide a swab sample.

  • Blood Stain (99% accuracy)
  • Whole Blood (99% accuracy)
  • Hair Follicles (95% accuracy)
  • Toothbrush (95% accuracy)
  • Earwax (95% accuracy)
  • Semen (95% accuracy)
  • Gum (95% accuracy) sugar free recommended

Please note, testing of forensic samples do not guarantee DNA profiles will be extracted from your samples. The lab has no control of how DNA samples submitted are handled and stored. We recommend that you contact our office to consult one of our DNA Consultants to confirm best sample collection handling requirements.

How to collect hair sample for DNA Testing?

Hair follicle collection requires careful attention to ensure DNA can be extracted. You must collect 10 hair samples, each with the root (follicle) attached.

NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:

Hair must be plucked or pulled directly from the scalp. Cut hair, hair from a brush, or hair without visible root bulbs will NOT work for DNA testing. The follicle (small bulb at the root) contains the genetic material needed for analysis.

Collection Steps:

1. Sample Requirements: Collect exactly 10 hair strands with visible roots attached

2. Collection Method:

• Grasp hair strand close to the scalp

• Pull quickly to remove hair with root intact

• Inspect each strand to verify the root bulb is present at the base

• Repeat until you have 10 hair samples with the root

3. Storage and Labeling:

• Label the envelope clearly with the person’s name

• Keep samples at room temperature • Do NOT use plastic bags (may cause contamination)

4. Timeline: Submit samples as soon as possible to prevent degradation

5. Shipping: Place envelope in the prepaid FedEx return envelope provided in your kit.

Adhering to the sample collection guidelines increases the likelihood of the lab producing a complete DNA profile. Please note that the quality and storage of your samples determine the success rate. There are no guarantees that a DNA profile will be produced when submitting forensic samples for analysis.
