DNA Testing For Passport Issuance
In some U.S. passport applications, additional evidence may be required when the documents submitted do not sufficiently establish a claimed biological relationship. For example, If your birth certificate was issued more than one year after your birth, the passport agency may request DNA testing to help verify that relationship.
IDTO DNA Testing Center provides U.S passport DNA testing services through our partner AABB-accredited laboratory, with results accepted by the U.S. passport agencies and United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) nationwide.
With over 22 years of experience and a near-zero sample failure rate at IDTO collection offices, our focus is to help ensure your case progresses efficiently and in full compliance with immigration requirements so you move forward, not backward.
U.S. Passport DNA Testing, How To Get Started?
Getting started is simple.
- You must have received a letter from one of the U.S. Passport Agency offices requesting you to perform a DNA test.
- Once you receive the document, you can contact our office at 888-204-0583 and allow one of our DNA consultants to help you with your case initiation with our partner, AABB Accredited Laboratory.
- After your case initiation, an appointment will be scheduled for DNA sample collection for all participants involved.
- Once all DNA samples have been collected, they’ll be sent to the laboratory for DNA analysis. After the analysis has been completed, a copy of the results will be sent by the laboratory directly to the requesting passport agency office.
It is important to note that performing a DNA test prior to receiving the letter from the passport agency is not recommended. Doing so does not follow the required chain-of-custody evidence submission by immigration and passport agencies.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to received my DNA results?
The average turnaround time to receive your DNA test results is three business days from the date the laboratory receives all required DNA samples.
Once testing is complete, the laboratory will send the results directly to the U.S. passport agency. You will also receive a copy for your records by mail and email.
Do I have to send my DNA results directly to the U.S. passport agency?
No, you should not send your DNA results yourself. To maintain proper chain of custody, the laboratory will send the results directly to the requesting U.S. passport agency.
You will also receive a copy of the results for your records, typically by mail and email.
Can a parent and child be tested at two different locations within the United States?
Yes, DNA samples can be collected at two different locations within the United States when performing a DNA test to submit as evidence to a U.S. passport agency.
Does DNA testing guarantee passport issuance?
No, DNA testing does not guarantee passport issuance. The final decision is always made by the passport agency officer reviewing your case.
However, DNA testing is considered a strong secondary option to help prove a claimed biological relationship when primary evidence is insufficient.
Can I perform a DNA test prior to receiving the request for DNA testing from a passport agency?
No, it is not recommended to perform a DNA test before receiving an official request from the U.S. passport agency.
DNA testing for passport and immigration purposes must follow a strict chain-of-custody process. If you complete a test on your own beforehand, it will be treated as a standard legal DNA test and will not be accepted as valid evidence.
If you have questions about your situation or need help getting started, contact our office at 888-204-0583 and we’ll guide you through the correct process.
Can I submit a DNA test with my passport application?
No, we do not recommend submitting a DNA test result with your passport application.
DNA testing used to prove a claimed biological relationship for a passport agency—or any immigration agency—must follow a strict chain-of-custody process. This means the testing laboratory must send the results directly to the requesting agency.
If you complete a DNA test before receiving an official request, it will most likely be rejected. This can lead to unnecessary delays and additional costs.
It is best to first file your application and wait for the agency to issue a request or suggest voluntary DNA testing. This ensures the process is completed correctly and your results will be accepted.
Why passport agencies request DNA testing?
The passport agency may request that DNA testing be performed when the evidence submitted to prove the claimed biological relationship during the filing of the initial application is insufficient.
When cases like these occur, your family may be asked to perform a DNA relationship test to confirm the claimed biological relationship. As stated before, DNA testing does not guarantee that the passport will be issued; that decision is at the discretion of the passport agency officer assigned to your case.
What are some common causes for delays:
- Late birth registration.
- Missing or inaccurate medical records
- Surrogacy and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)
Will my DNA results be kept private?
Yes, all DNA results are kept private, and results will only be released to the requesting immigration agency and the participants included in the DNA test.
In addition, all DNA samples are kept on file for up to 90 days. After 90 days, all DNA samples are destroyed.
