How to Perform a Discreet DNA Test (Private & Confidential)
One of the most common questions people ask before ordering a DNA test is whether the process will be private. At IDTO DNA Testing Center, all DNA testing services we provide are handled in a confidential and discreet manner.
Whether you are ordering a paternity test, a family relationship test, or another type of DNA test, your privacy is always a priority.
How Is a DNA Paternity Test Discreet?
Our DNA testing process is designed to remain private from start to finish.
1. Results Are Released Only to Authorized Participants
DNA test results are only provided to the individuals involved in the case (or to the legal guardian if a minor is being tested). Your information is never shared publicly.
2. Mobile DNA Collections Are Performed Discreetly
For clients who request mobile sample collection, our DNA collectors arrive:
- Wearing plain clothes
- Driving unmarked vehicles
- Without any signage or branding
This ensures the appointment does not draw attention. This applies to both legal DNA testing and non-legal (peace of mind) testing.
3. We Educate Clients on Consent
In some jurisdictions, collecting someone’s DNA sample without their knowledge or permission may have legal consequences. Because laws vary by state and country, we strongly recommend that clients review the laws in their jurisdiction or consult a legal professional when necessary.
Please note: All New York residents are required to provide one of the following documents in order to perform a DNA test within New York State:
1. A prescription referral from a New York State‑licensed doctor.
2. A letter from a New York State‑licensed family law attorney.
3. A court order from a judge.
What this basically means for New York residents: no at‑home DNA test kits can be performed, and it’s also important to note that performing a forensic test without permission in New York State is prohibited.
4. Removal of Company Name By Request:
In cases where clients want our company name removed and have the DNA kit sent to their home, office, or any private location as a standard package just as if they were receiving it from a friend we also accommodate that request.
Please be sure to speak with one of our DNA testing consultants about this request before or after your purchase to ensure the kit is shipped without our company name on the package.

Can a DNA Test Be Performed Without the Other Party Knowing?
In some situations, yes. However, this depends on the circumstances and local laws.
For example, if an alleged father has legal guardianship of a child under the age of 18, he may be able to perform a paternity test without notifying the other parent.
If an alleged father does not have legal guardianship of a child under the age of 18, permission must typically be obtained from the child’s legal guardian. This may be the mother or another relative who has legal custody.
If forensic samples are being used (such as hair or a toothbrush), it is important to understand that laws vary by jurisdiction, and collecting or using someone’s DNA without consent may have legal consequences.
For this reason, we strongly recommend you speak with a legal professional before performing a non-legal DNA test using a forensic DNA sample or before testing an underage child without the legal guardian’s permission.
Common Forensic Samples Used for Discreet DNA Testing
Getting consent is the morally and legally correct approach. Below are the most common forensic DNA samples used for discreet testing:
- Hair follicles (with the root attached)
- Toothbrush
- Nail clippings
- Earwax
