What is the method of DNA sample collection?

The standard DNA sample collection method is performed using a cheek swab collection. Buccal swab DNA collection is painless, non-invasive, and highly accurate for Home DNA testing.

Blood sample collections are available in certain situations, though this collection method is more invasive and typically unnecessary for most relationship DNA tests.

Can I use an alternative DNA sample for At-Home DNA Test?

Yes. Alternative forensic DNA samples can be used when an alleged father or child are unavailable to participate in the DNA testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to receive my DNA results?

The turnaround time for results is 2 to 3 business days from the date the laboratory receives all DNA samples. Upon the completion of your analysis, a copy of your results will be mailed to your home and an additional copy will be emailed to you.

Same-day results are available for additional cost. Please contact our office at 888-204-0583 for details.

Is Home Paternity Testing accurate?

Yes. At-Home Paternity Testing is highly accurate because the laboratory compares specific genetic markers inherited from biological parents. When DNA samples are properly collected, stored, and submitted according to the test kit instructions, the laboratory can perform a reliable genetic comparison between the tested individuals.

Our partner laboratory typically analyzes between 18 and 22 genetic markers during the paternity testing process to determine the probability of a biological relationship. In paternity inclusion cases, the probability of paternity is commonly reported as 99.99% or higher.

In exclusion cases, additional extended DNA analysis may be performed using up to 27 genetic markers to help determine whether the tested individuals are biologically unrelated.

The difference between a non-legal and a legal paternity test lies in the use of the results.

At Home DNA Paternity Test results are for informational purposes only. Establishing a chain of custody is not necessary for non-legal testing.

Legal Paternity DNA Tests require a strict chain of custody. A third-party DNA sample collector must collect the samples, and the DNA samples must be tested and analyzed by an AABB-accredited laboratory. Legal DNA test results may be used for court proceedings, birth certificate changes, child support matters, immigration cases, and other legal purposes.

Are DNA results confidential?

Yes. Your DNA test results are kept confidential. Results are released only to the individuals directly involved in the DNA testing process or to authorized agencies when required for legal or immigration DNA testing.

IDTO DNA Testing Center and its partner laboratory do not share your DNA information with third-party companies. In addition, DNA samples are typically destroyed within 3 months after the completion of the DNA testing process, in accordance with laboratory policies.

Can an At-Home Paternity Test be performed if the father is unavailable?

Yes. If the alleged father is unavailable for testing, a family reconstruction DNA test may be an alternative option. Family reconstruction testing uses DNA samples from other biological relatives to help determine whether a biological relationship exists.

Common family reconstruction DNA testing options include:

โ€ข At-Home Sibling DNA Test โ€“ Performed when the alleged father has another biological child available for testing.

โ€ข At-Home Grandparent DNA Test โ€“ Performed when one or both of the alleged father’s biological parents are available for testing.

โ€ข At-Home Avuncular DNA Test โ€“ Performed when the alleged father’s biological brother or sister is available for testing with the child.

Adding the child’s biological mother to a family reconstruction DNA test is strongly recommended whenever possible. The mother’s participation provides additional genetic information that may help strengthen the laboratory’s analysis and improve the statistical strength of the results.
